SDCFA A KEY PARTNER AT INGSA 2024
The International Network for Governmental Science Advice (INGSA) 2024 Conference, themed “The Transformation Imperative,” marked a historic milestone by convening in Kigali, Rwanda, the first time the event was held in the Africa.
The Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa (SDCFA) was a key partner in this conference, which brought together over 300 experts from academia, policymaking, diplomacy, and the private sector.
The focus was on expanding evidence-based, inclusive policies in a world that is post-COVID, climate-impacted, and digitally evolving.
Prominent figures such as Sir Jeremy Farrar, Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization, and Professor Sujatha Raman, UNESCO Chair in Science Communication for the Public Good, delivered impactful addresses. They emphasised the crucial role of science advice and communication in global health and policy-making.
Representing South Africa’s Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the SDCFA, Daan Du Toit, Acting Director General of DSI, participated in a panel discussion titled “Connecting Science Diplomacy Agendas in a Fragmented World.” This session highlighted the importance of developing national or regional science diplomacy agendas, frameworks, and strategies, often driven by foreign policy imperatives in isolation. The discussion aimed to foster a global dialogue among various initiatives to explore synergies that could mitigate the current fragmentation in international relations, emphasizing the potential of science diplomacy as a soft power tool.
Palesa Kganane, Strategic Partnership Coordinator at CSIR, played a key role in representing the SDCFA at INGSA 2024. She actively contributed to discussions on developing inclusive policies and utilising multidisciplinary approaches to address complex global issues. She was pivotal in networking sessions, forming strategic partnerships with international organisations, research institutions, and private sector entities. Additionally, she explored collaboration opportunities with representatives from various countries. Her involvement is particularly significant as the SDCFA, in partnership with DSI, CSIR, and the City of Tshwane (CoT), prepares to host the 2025 World Conference of Science Journalists. The insights and connections she gained will be crucial in shaping the event’s agenda to address global challenges and enhance science communication.
Overall, SDCFA’s involvement in the INGSA 2024 conference in Kigali, Rwanda, has solidified its position as a leader in science diplomacy and policy integration. The knowledge gained and partnerships formed will undoubtedly contribute to the success of future events and initiatives, further promoting the global exchange of scientific knowledge and best practices.
