Science Diplomacy for Social Justice at the World Science Forum
The World Science Forum 2022 and its call to action for creating a more equal, fair, and just world provided an ideal platform for a thematic session on Science Diplomacy for Social Justice. Organised by the Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa initiative and joint hosted with the Barcelona SciTech DiploHub and the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator, the session took place on Thursday, 8 December 2022.
Prof. Himla Soodyall of the Academy of Science of South Africa moderated the session. During Prof. Felix Dakora’s presentation on an African perspective on Science Diplomacy he highlighted related initiatives across the footprint of the African Academy of Sciences. He concluded that science diplomacy is the route to resolving complex problems and undertaking societal development global projects. View his presentation
Dr Jan Müller of the European Commission identified how EU Member States started developing Science Diplomacy related strategies over the last 15 years. In turn, how Ministries of Foreign Affairs started appointing science diplomacy experts. He concluded with ‘we need a modern science diplomacy that delivers social justice’. View his presentation
City-led science diplomacy and science diplomacy anticipating the future were addressed respectively by Alexis Roig of the Barcelona SciTech DiploHub and Dr Marga Gual Soler of the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator. They jointly also presented the Science Diplomacy Curriculum of those initiatives.
Prof. Himla Soodyall, Executive Officer of the Academy of Science of South Africa, moderated the session.
